Gumlu State School

Gumlu State School is a teaching-principal environment. The staff of Gumlu State School recognises the unique characteristics and learning needs of students as they move across the phases of learning. The school offers idividualised programs designed at enhancing and extending the students through the phases and their levels of achievement .

Currently all students have access to computers, with computer skills and technology integrated across all the curruculum areas. The senior students in years 5, 6 and 7 have individual laptops. Collaborative planning and active communication with neighbouring Band 5 school allows the student to share their knowledge and understanding with their peers and design pieces of environmental technology. The students also engage in Mathematical Problem Solving via Webcams.

The school continues works collaboaratively with neighbouring schools on Environmental Projects such as:

  • BBIFMAC - Bowen Burdekin Information Flood Management Advisory Committe
  • Reef Guardian - Reef HQ ( Gumlu SS is an active Reef Guardian School)
  • BDSEC - Burdekin District Student Environmental Council

One of the major Learning priorities for this year are the Queensland Comparatable Assessment Tasks. These tasks are designed to provide evidence of what studets know, understand and can do in relation to a selection of Essential Learnings for English, Mathematics and Science. QCAT's implementation dates for 2010 from week 1, Term 3, to the end of week 4, Term 4.

Data gathered from the 2009, NAPLAN results has been analaysed and key areas identified. Preparation and planning has commenced to raise the previous levels achieved.

School Leadership and Staff development priorities for this year include the completion of higher qualifications for teacher aides, enhance school leadership capability and professional responsibility through the development of professional knowledge, practice, values and relationships.

ICT's are embedded across the curriculum to enhance student knowledge and skills for their future. The use of Interactive Whiteboards has enhanced curriculum delivery and student learning and engagement. Mathemactis and English Programs have supported and developed the Essential Learings for all year levels.

Parents are an integral part of our school community. Parents are highly involved in the school setting, encouraged by an open-door policy that encourages participation in their child’s learning. Inofrmation nights and day sessions are provided to parents to provide them with current information on QCAR, QCATS and the Essential Learnings. NAPLAN information sessions are held prior to testing to ena ble parents to clarify information and relevance of the testing.

Parents are invited to assist with excursions and provide learning support in the classroom. P&C Meetings are held every second Tuesday of each month.
